Laboratory Foreman

Summary:  Responsibilites and tasks outlined in this document and are not exhaustive and may change as determined by the needs of the Wastewater Plant. Considerable knowledge to: conduct chemical and physical laboratory tests of solid materials, liquids, and gases and analyses of data by performing the following duties.

Position Responsibilites (include but are not limited to the following).

  • Set up laboratory equipment and instrumentation required for tests, research, or process control.
  • Tests and analyzes wastewater samples to ensure compliance with the NPDES permit requirements.
  • Prepares chemical solutions for use in processing materials following standardized formulas or experimental procedures.
  • Collect water samples from various locations on plant site for testing (PH, BOD, Chlorine, NH3, E. Coli, Fecal Coli form, dissolved oxygen, total suspended solids and total solids.
  • Test and analyze samples for parameters such as: CBOD, TBOD, ammonia, total solids, total dissolved solids, phosphorus, settleable solids.
  • Document results of tests and analyzes.
  • Ensures samples taken are in compliance with the NPDES permit
  • Perform all assignments as directed by Director.
  • Individual must be precise, detail oriented, team and goal oriented.
  • Collect samples from various locations on and off the plant site for analysis.
  • Lift sampler collection containers (approx. 50 lbs.).
  • Work alone on weekends and holidays.
  • Frequently exposed to wastewater, septage, and associated pathogens.
  • Required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel or crouch, deal with unpleasant odors.
  • Exposed to fumes, or airborne particles, and outside weather conditions.
  • Work indoor/outdoor environments including extreme heat and cold, rain, snow, insects etc.
  • Possibility of confined space and or heights.
  • Participate in training in the proper use of PPE in all situations.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Considerable ability to work well with others.
  • Knowledge of safe Laboratory practices.
  • Ability to read gauges, screens, and other monitoring devices.
  • Ability to climb steps and walk on hard surfaces.
  • Working ability to solve technical problems using reason.
  • Able to take direction well, and initiate repairs.
  • Mechanically minded. Familiarity with Scientific Equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow Standard Operational Procedures, as well as Standard Methods.
  • Use eyes, hand and fingers to operate or adjust equipment.
  • Use and read measuring devices.

 

Minimum Qualifications:  High School Diploma, valid driver’s license.

  • Associates Degree in Chemistry, Industrial Lab, Environmental Science or related field or.
  • Class 1 Wastewater License with emphasis in Laboratory knowledge.
  • Physical and drug screen required before hire.
  • All applicants must be authorized to work in the USA.

Working Conditions:  In and outdoor environments, including extreme heat and extreme cold, insects will be present.

  • Working with heights.
  • Confined spaces (inside open tanks).
  • Possibility of getting dirty/ sludge covered while working.
  • Ability to work both day/night shift.

 

Training and Teaching:

  • Participate in all training provided through the plant including Safety Training courses.
  • Use of PPE and maintenance of departmental safety and all other equipment.
  • Follow directions from the Director regarding all issues of Job performance and other work related issues.

Physical Requirements:

  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects.
  • Ability to see within normal parameters.
  • Ability to hear within normal range.
  • Able to carry weight up to 50 lbs.
  • Manual dexterity in hands and legs to use tools, bend and stretch.
  • Sufficient physical ability to perform all tasks.
  • Able to climb ladders and stairs repeatedly throughout shift.
  • Able to work in a kneeling or squatting position for extended periods of time.
