Jurisdiction
Terre Haute City Court has jurisdiction over criminal misdemeanors, state infractions, and city ordinance violations. The court has geographical jurisdiction in Vigo County, not just within the city limits of Terre Haute.
Misdemeanors
A violation of the Indiana Statutes for which a person might be imprisoned up to one year. Fines up to $5,000 can also be added with a conviction.
Infractions
A violation of the Indiana Statute for which a person might be fined but not imprisoned. Most traffic violations are considered infractions, but not all. Fines up to $10,000 may be added with a conviction.
Ordinances
Terre Haute City Ordinance Violations, such as trash and debris, and overgrowth of grass and weeds, and animal neglect, can be assessed fines up to $2,500.
Fines, Costs and Fees
The Terre Haute City Clerk’s Office collects fines and costs for all cases under the jurisdiction of the Terre Haute City Court.
