February 12, 2024

The City of Terre Haute is opening a new recycling center for City residents! Starting Wednesday February 14th, recycling may be brought to the City Street Department facility at the corner of Deming St. and S. 14th St. Users of the service will enter and exit the 14th St. gate. Please refer to the diagram for an overview of the recycling location and instructions for traffic. The recycling bins will be located against the chain link fence on the east boundary of the complex. Please use extra caution when inside the facility as you will be sharing space with City employees.

We are starting small and unable to recycle glass at this time. We plan to add glass recycling later this year. Here are some rules for using the recycling  center at the Street Department:

1. NO thin plastic bags or wrap. If you can poke your finger through the plastic its not acceptable as it gets caught in our sorting machine.

2. Product should be LOOSELY emptied into the bins.

3. Boxes need to be broken down.

4. We are not accepting glass. YET. If you would like to recycle glass, please visit the Vigo County Solid Waste Management Facility (3230 E Haythorne Ave, Terre Haute, IN 47805).

5. ONLY cleaned and dry products. Bottles need to be rinsed out and dried. This is mainly for milk jugs, ketchup bottles, etc.

"I acknowledge that this center isn't perfect. But we have to start somewhere. Change does not happen overnight. As a community, we will continue to provide options for our residents to recycle and move towards a more sustainable community one cardboard box at a time."
