NEW Leaf Pickup Area
December 16, 2019
Leaf Pickup is moving to the East side Neighborhoods once snow melts.
We have completed Phoenix Hills and Robinwood and we will continue working in Woodridge and then move to Linclonshire and make our way South.
Beginning December 16th, the Street Department has suspended leaf pick up until the snow has melted.
Areas will be East of Fruitridge between Wabash and Davis.
Once this is completed we will continue with the remaining areas of the city. Please check back often for updates.
Please rake your leaves into the tree row and not into the streets. Please do not mix limbs or debris with your leaves.
If you do not wish to rake your leaves you can mulch or bag them. You may set your bagged leaves in or beside your blue trash toter and Republic Services will pick up to 10 bags per week.

We are finishing up Woodridge then moving to Wyndham, followed by Lincolnshire/Woodshire, then Edgewood Grove.
Please have your leaves raked into a pile in the tree row and NOT in the street. Keeping the large piles in the tree row helps keep the storm sewers from becoming easily plugged which then leads to street flooding.
If instead, you wish to bag your leaves, you may put them in or next to your blue trash toter and Republic Services will pick up to 10 bags per week.
Note: We work hard to stay on the advertised schedule but heavy rain, snow or freezing temperatures can make it difficult to vacuum the leaves so we sometimes run a few days behind.
The next pickup area will be announced next week through the media and on the City of Terre Haute Facebook page. You can also find an up-to-date schedule on our website at www.terrehaute.in.gov.

Official Letter from Mayor Duke Bennett Concerning COVID-19
Official Letter from Mayor Duke Bennett Concerning COVID-19
March 18, 2020
Dear Citizens of Terre Haute,
We’re living in a time of uncertainty, and with uncertainty both collaboration and compassion become a part of our journey, together. Our community has experienced hardships before, but none quite like our current reality. Recognizing this current state, I want to assure you that preventive measures that pledge our community’s health is my priority. I have been following national, state and local announcements, including many offered just in the past two days. In addition, I’m proud to be a part of a local coalition working to combat COVID-19 and know everyone in the community is finding ways to help one another stay well.
From various meetings and communications received, I would like to offer information that might be helpful to you.
- City Hall is open to the public but with limited access. I request that all routine business be done over the phone or online. We are not currently processing counter payments but we have a payment drop box at the rear entrance of City Hall. Please check our website at www.terrehaute.in.gov for updated information or call 311 with any questions regarding doing business with the City of Terre Haute.
- Duke Energy, Vectren and Indiana American Water have pledged to suspend disconnections for those experiencing financial hardship at this time. The City of Terre Haute is also temporarily suspending water disconnections for persons with sewage bill hardships.
- To learn essential information from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) regarding the virus (including preventative measures) you can visit www.cdc.gov.
- You can also visit the Indiana State Department of Health’s website at www.in.gov/coronavirus to receive real time information on how Indiana is managing the concerns – including information on closures, social distancing and overall information on confirmed cases by county.
- Local information on the coronavirus can be found on the Vigo County Health Department website found at www.vigocounty.in.gov.
I recognize a lot will probably change again from the time I send this letter. As things change, I can only promise to update you as information becomes pertinent to your safety and wellbeing. Although there are no confirmed cases to date in Vigo County, we are not taking this good fortune lightly. Our health systems, school systems and business sectors have all prepared and implemented processes to help combat the virus.
I’m confident we have good people doing good things and it will be a community effort to move beyond the days ahead. It is our civic duty as citizens of our community to follow the instructions provided by our healthcare experts and our government, and ensure we go above and beyond to keep us healthy by working together.
Thank you for your trust.

Message from Mayor Duke A. Bennett – City of Terre Haute
Citizens of Terre Haute,
We have come a long way over the past several weeks dealing with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it has now prepared us for what is next - moving forward. Working together, we have accomplished a lot, and together, we will continue to do even more.
As Mayor of the City of Terre Haute, I am extremely humbled at the care, attentiveness and selfless acts that our healthcare industry and every essential worker has contributed to ensure the functionality of the city and the protection of our people. With this, I am also grateful for our citizenry who prioritized social distancing and took the seriousness of the “stay-at-home” order to heart. It is because of all of our efforts that we are able to move forward and see a bright future.
The Governor's five-stage rollout for getting the state back on track is a roadmap for our state, region and the Terre Haute community. I stand with the Governor, and I encourage the same consideration and vigilance you have exhibited during the state's “stay-at-home” order to carry into Indiana’s “Back on Track” plan. The details are outlined at www.backontrack.in.gov.
As for the City of Terre Haute government, I wanted to provide an update on how we will operate in conjunction with the most recent Executive Order from Governor Holcomb. The following information should help lay out the upcoming steps of our plan:
Beginning May 11th
- All City buildings will remain closed to the public.
- City employees are working but some will continue working remotely. You may call 311 for assistance with city government.
- City parks are open, but playgrounds and restrooms remain closed.
- Golf courses remain open and continue following all CDC guidelines.
Beginning May 24th
- All city park playgrounds, restrooms and indoor facility rentals will open to the public.
On May 25th
- Memorial Day services at Woodlawn and Highland Lawn Cemeteries have been cancelled.
Beginning May 26th
- All city employees will be back in their normal assigned work locations.
- City Hall offices along with all other city locations will begin limited public access from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm each business day.
Beginning June 8th
- Deming Park pool will open (weather permitting).
Beginning June 14th
- Public access restrictions will be lifted at all city locations. Normal business hours will resume with full public access available.
- The Parks Department Nature Center, Torner Center and Native American Museum will reopen.
- All city park programs, softball leagues and the Deming Park train will begin operating.
July 4th
- The annual fireworks show will be conducted at Fairbanks Park.
Note: This schedule was created in conjunction with the Governor’s “Back on Track” plan and timeline and is subject to change based on new information and CDC guidance.
We have been very fortunate as a community to keep our COVID-19 numbers at a very manageable level so far. With retail opening back up this week, places of worship opening this weekend and restaurants and personal services (hair and nail salons, spas, tattoo parlors, etc.) opening up next week, now is not the time to let our guard down. It will be extremely important to continue to social distance from others, wash your hands multiple times each day, wear a mask when in public places and stay at home if you are sick. Those over 65 years old and those with high-risk health conditions should continue to “stay at home” as much as possible to continue protecting yourself from infection.
It is our responsibility to ensure we get “back on track” safely and are prepared to welcome the bright future ahead. I look forward to gathering again soon and celebrating this community, the patriotism of our citizens, our frontline workers and all that is to come.
Stay safe and stay well!

Mayor Duke A. Bennett - COVID-19 Update
Mayor Duke A. Bennett - COVID-19 Update
May 5, 2020
To all city employees,
Last Friday, Governor Holcomb updated his COVID-19 Executive Order (No. 20-26). It describes a multi-phased approach to reopening the State of Indiana and is called “Back on Track Indiana”. The following plan will describe how we will proceed as the City of Terre Haute:
May 4th – We will continue to operate as we have for the past several weeks. Some employees will still work from home and all others will continue working in their normal assigned location.
May 18th – City Court/City Clerk’s Office will open from 8:00 am – 12:00 pm on business days. The public will be limited to the first floor of City Hall only during those hours and the elevator and stairwells will remain locked all day. The public will continue to do business with other departments in City Hall via web-site and telephone only. Other city facilities will continue to be operational but remain closed to the public.
May 26th – All employees working from home will return to normal work locations (exceptions would be those who are sick or those most vulnerable to the coronavirus – please direct any questions to your supervisor). Limited public access to City Hall and other city facilities will begin between the hours of 8:00 am - 12:00 pm each business day.
June 14th – Public access restrictions will be lifted at all city facilities. We will resume normal business hours (8:00 am – 4:00 pm) with full public access to all city buildings.
This schedule was created using the current guidelines from the Governor’s Executive Order and are subject to change based on any new information and CDC guidance. I will provide updates if there are any changes to the schedule or to staff requirements. Note: The use of face masks, 6’ social distancing and hand washing/workspace cleaning are recommended (following the CDC and Vigo County Health Department Guidelines) until at least July 4th.
I appreciate all of you working hard for the citizens of Terre Haute as we get through this global pandemic together!

Terre Haute City Hall Schedule for July 4 - July 17, 2020
This information was just released by Mayor Duke A. Bennett.
Yesterday, Governor Holcomb modified the originally proposed “Back on Track Indiana” plan. Instead of moving into Stage 5, he created a new Stage 4.5 due to the slight increase in cases and hospitalizations in our state during the past week. This new phase will go from July 4th – July 17th, 2020.
Based on this change of the state plan, I need to modify our reopening plan as follows:
- July 6th – City Court located within City Hall plans to open to the public on Monday morning. City Hall will be open from 8:00 am until 12:00 noon each business day only for those persons set for a hearing in City Court. No other members of the public will be permitted in City Hall at this time and we ask citizens to continue conducting business with all city departments via our web-site and by telephone. Note: All other city facilities (all those other than City Hall) will remain closed to public access but “in person” appointments for critical issues can still be made by contacting the appropriate department by telephone. Any member of the public entering City Hall for City Court will be screened and are required to wear a mask (along with all city staff who are interacting with those members of the public). Everyone should practice social distancing.
- July 20th – Public access restrictions are lifted at all city facilities. We will resume normal business hours (8:00 am – 4:00 pm each business day) with full access to all city buildings. Upon reopening, all visitors should be prepared to be screened before entry, must wear a mask and are required to practice social distancing. City staff who interact directly with the public are required to wear a mask during those encounters and to practice social distancing.
This updated schedule was created using the current guidelines of the Governor’s Executive Order and is subject to change.
We continue to make progress but it is still unknown when this pandemic might end. I ask for your assistance by following the COVID-19 pandemic CDC guidelines as we work through this and continue serving the citizens of our community.
Sincerely,
Mayor Duke A. Bennett
