Updates from Mayor Brandon

April 12, 2024

Last night, April 11th, 2024, the City Council unanimously voted to move forward with two projects funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

This summer we will begin the process of expanding Indiana American Water services to residents in North Terre Haute. This long awaited project will be a catalyst for future efforts across our city. We will be releasing more information on this process in the coming months.

The council also voted in support of our funding plan to address food deserts in our community. Catholic Food Charities and Terre Foods will be expanding services and tackling this issue on the front lines.

Housing Update:

Earlier this year I met with Thrive West Central to optimize the Vigo County Homes for the Future Program. They suggested that we modify the grant to include home rehabilitation, new builders, nonprofit organizations, and traditional builders. I supported their effort to modify the existing grant. Those efforts have now led to 271 housing units. These units are a mix of home rehabilitation projects, new builds on vacant lots, neighborhood developments, and tiny homes for veterans. This program is setting the standard across the state. If you are interested in applying for the Vigo County Homes for the Future Grant click HERE

If you are interested in joining our efforts to build homes on vacant lots contact [email protected] and cc my email, [email protected]. Small Business and Nonprofit Grant Update: Many have asked for information regarding grants for small businesses and nonprofits. We have partnered with United Way to facilitate over $2 million dollars of grants to these groups. Information can be found HERE.

The City of Terre Haute is committed to maximizing the funds given by the federal government through the American Rescue Plan Act.

Trash Ordinance Update for the Terre Haute Sanitary District

Trash Ordinance Update for the Terre Haute Sanitary District

May 14, 2024

At the City Council meeting on May 9th, the general ordinance passed amending City Code, Chapter 9, Article 5, Sections 9-116 and 9-117 about the cost of the Waste and Refuse Collection Fees. Before 2019, the price had increased yearly by a flat rate of $0.50.
A large budget shortfall was identified using the previous fee schedule. This administration has decided to bridge the gap to help ease the deficit. We explored other options before making the unfortunate decision to increase this fee.
I acknowledge that Hoosiers on a fixed income have felt the effect of private-sector inflation over the last several years. To ease this burden on Hoosiers hit hardest during the pandemic and years past, we have also increased the discount you can receive on your bill if you are over 65, blind or disabled, a disabled veteran, or a surviving spouse. (Eligible individuals must have filed and been granted a deduction on their property taxes by the County Auditor.)
