Position Responsibilities (include but are not limited to the following):
- Maintains and services vehicles and equipment to ensure they operate as designed and in a safe and efficient manner.
- Keeps work area clean and orderly.
- Ensures repairs were properly executed by testing vehicles and equipment.
- Assists with heavy equipment duties or other departmental needs in the event of an emergency or temporary shortage of personnel.
- Work with other department mechanics and department personnel to ensure optimal workflow.
- Knowledge of working with diesel engines
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Highly proficient using a cutting torch and electric welder.
- Highly proficient in analyzing and troubleshooting vehicles and equipment to diagnose problems, determine root cause, plan repair strategy and perform necessary repairs.
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified or must obtain certification within 12 months of employment start date.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education/Training: High School Diploma or Equivalent.
Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience working as a full time mechanic on heavy trucks and/or equipment (Diesel mechanic experience preferred Must have experience with hydraulics, brake systems, power transmission, suspension members, diesel engines, electrical systems as well as tune-up and carburetion on gasoline engines and equipment.
Working Conditions: Often outdoors and in extreme weather conditions.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to see within normal parameters with or without corrective lenses.
- Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.
- Ability to work in inclement weather conditions including extreme heat and humidity, below freezing temperatures, wind, rain, ice and snow for extended periods.
- Dexterity in hands to use tools.
- Ability to bend legs, torso and waist as well as stretch and reach to work in tight spaces (i.e. underneath vehicles/equipment, inside engine compartments, inside vehicle/equipment body panels, etc.)
